Crocheted Baby Sling

Crocheted Baby Sling Pattern

I designed this baby sling pattern when I was pregnant with my son. I had always wanted a sling to carry my baby around in instead of a backpack. I felt that the sling would be more intimate than the backpack. Once I gave birth to my son and felt like getting a little active, I started carrying him around everywhere in the baby sling. He loved it! When you first put the baby in the sling it looks like they are all crunched up and uncomfortable, but remember that they are allot worse off when they are in the whom.

I love this sling; it fits well and works awesome. You can put the baby in the sling lying on their back, facing out and laying on their stomach on your chest. It works great for all of these positions. I also liked the sling better than the backpack because if you needed to bend down or grab something you could move the baby and sling from side to side so you didn’t squish the baby.

Because of the open mesh design the sling gets great circulation and can be used in the shower, pool, lake, in hot weather, etc.

The sling at first may seem a little small, don’t worry it will end up being bigger. When the bag is newly made it is fresh and tight, once you put a baby in it the weight of the baby will stretch out the stitches thus making it a little bigger. The more you use it the better fitting it gets. So if you make this bag while you are pregnant you can just add some weight to the sling and hang it up to stretch it out a little before the baby is born or you can just wait until the baby is born and stretch it out that way. I found that when I was pregnant the sling didn’t fit real well at all, probably because of my stomach, but when I had my baby the sling fit quite well.

SECOND SIDE:

Skip 10 spaces from the last st worked on row 24, ch 3 and work same as rows 24-56 for first side. Fasten and end off.

You may wish to add or subtract rows after row 37 in order to adjust sizing but remember the stretch of the yarn.

FINISHING: From wrong sides, sl st both ends of shoulder tog.

TRIM: With right side facing, either with same yarn or contrasting color, sc 2 in each dc st.

ANOTHER WAY TO TRIM: with right side facing, either with same yarn or contrasting color, one sc in each dc st, one sc in the end of each plain dc row--which i think prevents stretching some--and two sc in the end of each dec row (bet 24 and 37 on each side). Work the second sc in the end of each dec row into the dec st in order to prevent a big gap in the work.
